Numismatic & Historical Notes

This silver rupee evokes Hyderabad under Mir Usman Ali Khan, its last ruling Nizam (1911–1948), combining architectural imagery with elegant Persian inscriptions a miniature expression of princely identity. Obverse: The iconic Charminar takes centre stage, with the Persian letter ‘ain’ within its gateway identifying Usman. Surrounding it, “Nizam-ul-Mulk Bahadur Asaf Jah” proclaims the ruler’s titles, linking his authority to the Asaf Jahi dynasty. The architectural motif gives the coin an unmistakably Hyderabadi character. Reverse: The Persian inscription incorporates “sana julus,” indicating the regnal year, and “zarb,” meaning struck, alongside the mint designation Farkhanda Bunyad Hyderabad. These details help collectors place an individual specimen within the Nizam’s reign.
